The Admissions Department at Southeastern University (SEU), in Lakeland, Fla., added 10 new lead campus ambassador positions that include scholarship awards in addition to the 8 student leader positions this year. In the 2018 to 2019 academic year there were only 10 student leader positions. Previously, SEU has had 20 tour guides who receive scholarships.
The positions within the Admission Department include two campus ambassador team coordinators, one tour guide coordinator, one special events coordinator, one communication lead, one event logistics coordinator, one class visits coordinator, one hospitality team coordinator, 10 campus ambassadors and 20 tour guides.
Montana Hancock started a position as a graduate assistant in the fall of 2019. She coordinates and plans daily visits and events for prospective students.
“These positions were added because, in order to put on successful events, we needed a team. We wanted people on our team who have been impacted by SEU and could share their story with prospective students,” said Hancock.
In addition to the scholarshipped positions in the Admission Department, there are up to 150 volunteer campus ambassadors. Two campus ambassador team coordinators recruit and schedule volunteers to help on visit event days throughout the semester. “We are so thankful for the people that volunteer because they really do make prospective student's visits that much better,” said Hancock. Volunteer campus ambassadors who are active have the opportunity for future scholarshipped student leadership positions or student worker positions in the Admission Office.
Rachel Sattler, a junior at SEU, began a position as an Ambassador Team Coordinator in the fall 2019 semester. “If I didn’t have the scholarship I wouldn't be able to afford to go to school here. Being able to get a scholarship for doing something fun and working with prospective students is an amazing opportunity,” said Sattler.
At the end of the year, the admission team’s top 10 ambassadors are chosen to be on scholarship for the next year. The student leaders in roles that include more responsibility and demand more of a time commitment receive $2,000 in scholarships annually.
As the campus ambassador team coordinator, Sattler’s job is to recruit students to volunteer on SEU prospective student days such as One Day, Preview Day, and Athletic Day. Sattler is responsible for communicating with the students she recruits, sending updates, creating run sheets for event days and getting people to sign up. During the events Sattler assists the volunteers with their roles, and answers any additional questions.
Southeastern’s Admission Team mainly recruits student volunteers through Club Rush, an event hosted to engage students with different clubs on campus. During this event the admission team utilizes campus ambassadors to explain to other students the different ways to get connected.
"It’s never been hard to recruit people because students want to be apart of the team," said Sattler.
